Based on verbal stories transferred from one generation to another, the former name of Matayuncab was Saranquinod. According to the story, the first settlers of Sarangquinod were brother Mateo and Ayung Antonio the great grandfather of Mundo Castillo and Juan Valete.
Together with Mateo as the leader the four settlers title the lands and developed the community of Sarangquinod. Perhaps the later settler remembered them so that the name Mataynucab was coined MAT from Mateo, AYUN, and CAB from cabsat (meaning brother).
So from four, the number of people increased year by year. Today, the present population is 1536.
